In a recent conversation with Gary Packham, we explored the journey of Anglia Ruskin Enterprise Academy (AREA) as they reapprove as an IOEE Centre of Excellence in 2023.
The AREA, a specialist branch of Anglia Ruskin University, has been a trailblazer in entrepreneurial education. The IOEE accreditation recognises the values and mission of AREA to provide accessible enterprise education to their students. The recognition signifies that the academy has met and exceeded the standards set by the IOEE, in delivering accessible, valuable and impactful enterprise education. This recognition not only boosts the academy’s reputation but also places the academy in a network of excellence.
Professor Gary Packham, Pro Vice Chancellor for student enterprise and entrepreneurship at AREA, shared insights into the process of the reapproval. He emphasised the continuous reflection and critique of the academy’s programmes to stay aligned with the ever-changing demands of the enterprise industry. This adaptability, according to Packham, is crucial in preparing students for the dynamic challenges of entrepreneurship.
One of the standout features of AREA’s approach is its emphasis on practical learning. The academy promotes independent engagement with industry and professional networks from the start. Packham explained that while the University provides the skills, knowledge and training in enterprise, joining a professional network like the IOEE is a really important step in their professional development.
IOEE’s recognition extends beyond national borders, making the accreditation a global stamp of approval. AREA’s reapproval as a Centre of Excellence not only showcases their dedication to excellence but also positions them, globally, as an example of entrepreneurial education.
Beyond academic achievements, AREA is committed to making a positive impact on the wider community. The academy’s outreach programs, alumni support and engagement projects with their learners contribute to building a culture of entrepreneurship beyond the classroom, fostering innovation and economic growth in the region. The academy also focuses its efforts on continuing development for graduates and students, ensuring the students receive ongoing support once they have completed their programme.
AREA are committed to ensuring their enterprise and entrepreneurship offering is as relevant and valuable as possible. Using the IOEE approval as a method of critiquing their offering, and gaining valuable insights when mapping to the National Occupational Standards, AREA truly is making the most of their IOEE status. The academy continues to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of entrepreneurs, providing adaptable and accessible training to their student network.
Gary went on to explain that the AREA is there to support learners to become “confident, capable and have the capacity to be entrepreneurs”, as evidence suggests that entrepreneurship is becoming more of an option for those entering their academic career. With the AREA focusing on making entrepreneurship available and accessible to all, it is clear the next wave of entrepreneurs are set to be stronger and more capable than before.
The Centre of Excellence status also has a positive impact on faculty, providing value and a level of confidence that the Academy is aligned with the Centre of Excellence standards.
It was great to check in with Gary, and we can not wait to see what the Anglia Ruskin Enterprise Academy do next.
